REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICANTS

  • Applicants must choose one day or the other, and plan to stay throughout the entire session. Both the Thursday and Friday sessions will be the same.
  • Applicants must be start-up executives, founders, or marketers of new internet ventures that intend to grow globally within the next three years. No more than two people from any one company can attend.
  • Applicants must belong to firms, or intend to start firms, that are based in Scotland.
  • Preference will given to those applicants from early stage, potentially high growth internet start-ups.

PRE-SEMINAR ASSIGMENTS

Participants will be required to complete two assignments before attending the seminar.

  1. Participants must read all of the blog entries from Sean Ellis in his start-up marketing blog over the past two years. It will be assumed that participants have read and know this information. The seminar will be more advanced than the content of the blog - this information will form a basis of understanding. Sean's blog is located here: http://startup-marketing.com/
  2. Participants must survey their current or intended customer bases using Sean's free ''Customer development survey template''.This will be distributed beforehand. The results of this survey will be analysed and used during the seminar.

About the Workshop Leader

Sean Ellis led marketing from launch through to NASDAQ IPO filings at both LogMeIn and Uproar, and later helped bring Xobni to market as interim VP Marketing. Sean currently lives and works in Silicon Valley. He is now founder and principal at 12in6 Inc., a firm that works with CEO's at select venture capital backed start-ups (such as Eventbrite, and Sequoia-backed Dropbox) to transition into high growth companies. 12IN6's low burn, Metrics-driven approach helps internet start-ups achieve the critical success milestones needed to reach their growth potential.

Supporting and inspiring globally ambitious software companies in Scotland

The Context

For over half a century Scotland has consistently demonstrated global leadership in Informatics and Computer Science research, with a cluster rivaling Boston, Pittsburgh, Kyoto and Silicon Valley. Testament to this is the recent opening of a major Informatics science hub  in Edinburgh by Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond, which is the highest-quality in the UK, biggest in Europe and in the top four globally.

Informatics Ventures has been established with funding from the University of Edinburgh, Scottish Enterprise and the European Regional Development Fund with a mission to increase the economic impact of this formidable base of research and innovation, nurturing Scottish entrepreneurs to create global software blockbusters.

Informatics Ventures seeks to engage Scotland’s high-tech serial entrepreneurs and investors for advice and wisdom. The initiative will support ambitious software startups and contribute a significant entrepreneurship agenda to the Informatics and Computer Science base across Scotland.

Informatics Ventures

Many entrepreneurs, academics and policy makers are passionate about creating and growing more software and web companies in Scotland, creating wealth and prosperity and as Guy Kawasaki would say, meaning. Informatics Ventures has been set up with catalyst funding from the following sponsors:

The Agenda

Over three years the initiative will develop and deliver an agenda of:

  • growing the global aspirations of Scotland's nascent entrepreneurs;
  • practitioner led entrepreneurship education (i.e. for entrepreneurs by entrepreneurs);
  • community networking and resources (online & face to face);
  • supporting teams, leaders, mentors and management talent; and
  • connecting startups to sources of venture capital and angel investment.
